HOORAY FOR HOLLYWOOD!

I’m a Meryl Streep fan.  Well really, who isn’t?  I’ve been a fan since “Sophie’s Choice” and any movie she is in I will line up at the box office to see.  Though “Hope Springs” didn’t get too many favorable reviews, I went to see it and enjoyed it, mainly because of the actors in this movie.  Grant it, it was a bit slow but the acting did not disappoint.  Of course Meryl Streep was superb.  She can raise an eyebrow at the most significant moment and make it delightfully meaningful.  Tommy Lee Jones as always was wonderful and Steve Carell was surprisingly good in a non comedic role.

I am most gratified that Hollywood is releasing films that are targeted to the mature audience.   “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” was another distinctive look at aging issues with veteran British actors who made this movie as humorous as it was poignant.  I’m sure the movie moguls behind these releases came to the realization our generation, the Baby Boomers, have been starving for entertaining movies that would be of interest to us.

Baby Boomers, of which I am a member, are a goldmine for marketers and merchants. According to some statistics we make up 44% of the population and 70-some-odd-percent of them have disposable income. Most Baby Boomers live longer, healthier and vibrant lives so there are many of us out there.  Not to mention, if they planned their financial future appropriately, they have expendable income which is applied to everything from entertainment, to travel to consumer goods.

In a previous blog I addressed women’s aging issues pointing out how some astute beauty companies have featured older models in their ads.  Numbers (years) are just that.  We don’t sit at home waiting for things to happen.  We make things happen! We are active, social, and enjoy the arts.  Looks like Hollywood got the picture!
